How to Prepare for Skip Delivery in Halifax - 7 Simple Tips

Hiring a skip is a convenient way to get rid of waste from home renovations, garden clearances, building projects and general household clear-outs.

But before your skip arrives, there are a few simple things you can do to make delivery easier.

At AVA Waste Management Group Ltd, we provide skip hire across Halifax and the surrounding areas, helping homeowners, builders and businesses manage their waste.

Whether you're hiring your first skip or have used one before, these seven tips will help you prepare.

1. Decide Where Your Skip Will Go

Before booking your skip, think about where it can safely be positioned.

A private driveway or suitable area of private land is often the simplest option.

Consider whether the ground is reasonably level, stable and capable of supporting the skip and its contents.

Remember that a skip can become extremely heavy once filled with waste.

If you're unsure whether your chosen location is suitable, speak to the AVA team before booking. We'll discuss your requirements and help you identify a suitable delivery arrangement.

2. Make Sure There's Enough Access

One of the most important things to consider is whether the delivery wagon can safely reach your property.

Skip wagons need sufficient space to manoeuvre, position the skip and leave safely.

Before your delivery, check for:

  • Parked vehicles blocking the entrance
  • Narrow driveways or access roads
  • Low branches or overhead obstructions
  • Gates, walls or other obstacles
  • Limited turning or manoeuvring space

This can be particularly important around Halifax, where some residential streets and properties have restricted access.

If your property is on a narrow road, steep driveway or difficult-to-access location, let us know when booking. Providing photographs of the proposed delivery location may help our team assess the arrangements.

3. Check Whether You Need a Skip Permit

If your skip can be placed entirely on suitable private land, a highway skip licence is not normally required.

However, if it needs to be placed on the public highway, permission will be necessary.

In Calderdale, the skip company must apply for the appropriate highway skip licence. The council currently requires skip companies to apply at least seven days before the intended delivery date.

This means it's important to tell AVA as early as possible if your skip needs to go on the road. We'll discuss the permit requirements and the arrangements available for your location.

For more detail, read our guide to skip permits in Halifax.

4. Clear the Delivery Area

Before your skip arrives, make sure the agreed delivery area is clear.

Move vehicles, bins, garden furniture and other movable obstacles that could prevent safe access.

It's also worth checking that gates can open fully and that there is enough space for the delivery wagon to operate.

If you have a shared driveway, consider letting your neighbours know about the planned delivery. A little preparation can help avoid unnecessary delays.

5. Choose the Right Skip Size

Choosing a suitable skip size is important, especially if you have limited space.

AVA offers different skip sizes for different projects.

Mini Skips A useful option for smaller household clearances, garden tidy-ups and minor DIY projects.

Midi Skips Suitable for many kitchen or bathroom renovations, larger clearances and general home improvement projects.

Larger Skips Designed for bigger renovation projects, construction waste and more substantial clearances.

Remember that larger skips require more space and that heavy materials can affect which size is suitable.

If you're unsure what size you need, read our guide to what size skip you need for different projects or tell us about your project and the waste you're disposing of. Our team can help you choose an appropriate option.

6. Know What Can Go in Your Skip

Before filling your skip, make sure you understand which materials are accepted.

Many general household, garden and construction materials can be suitable, depending on the type of skip and your booking arrangements.

However, certain items must not be placed in standard skips. These include:

  • Batteries
  • Asbestos
  • Gas cylinders
  • Paints, oils and hazardous chemicals
  • Tyres
  • Electrical appliances requiring separate disposal
  • Other prohibited or specially controlled waste

Some materials, such as mattresses, carpets and certain construction products, may also require additional arrangements or charges.

Always tell AVA what type of waste you're disposing of when booking. If you're unsure about an item, ask before putting it in the skip.

7. Make Sure Your Skip Is Ready for Collection

Once your skip has been delivered, you can begin filling it with the agreed waste. However, it's important to load it safely.

Never overfill your skip. Waste should not extend above the permitted loading level, and nothing should be left sticking out dangerously. Overloaded skips may not be safe to transport and could result in a failed collection.

You should also avoid moving the skip after it has been positioned by the delivery driver.

When you're ready for collection, make sure the wagon can access the skip again. If you've parked vehicles around it or placed materials nearby, clear these before collection.

You can contact AVA to arrange collection or request a skip exchange if you need another skip.

Do You Need to Be Home When Your Skip Arrives?

Not necessarily.

If your booking has been confirmed, payment arrangements are complete and clear delivery instructions have been provided, it may be possible for your skip to be delivered without you being present.

However, if there are access difficulties or specific placement requirements, it's worth discussing these with our team beforehand.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a Skip?

It's always sensible to arrange your skip before your project begins.

This gives you time to choose the right size, confirm delivery arrangements and resolve any access or permit requirements.

If your skip needs to be placed on the public highway, allow additional time for the necessary permission.

AVA offers delivery options subject to availability, so contact us to discuss your preferred date.
