What Can and Cant Go in a Skip? Your Halifax Skip Hire Guide

Skip hire in Halifax is one of the easiest ways to get rid of waste from home improvements, garden clearances, renovations and building projects.

But before you start filling it, there's one important thing to remember.

Not everything can go into a skip.

Some materials require special handling, while others can create serious safety risks or additional disposal costs.

At AVA Waste Management Group Ltd, we want to make skip hire as straightforward as possible.

Here's our simple guide to what you can and cannot put in a skip.

What Can You Put in a Skip?

Most standard skips are suitable for a wide range of general household, garden and construction waste.

However, the type and quantity of waste must be agreed when booking.

General Household Waste

Skips are useful when clearing out your home, garage, loft or shed.

Common examples include:

  • General household clutter
  • Unwanted non-electrical items
  • Cardboard and packaging
  • Wood and timber
  • Suitable non-upholstered furniture

If you're disposing of upholstered furniture, mattresses or electrical items, check with AVA first — additional restrictions or charges may apply.

Garden Waste

Planning an autumn garden clearance? Read our dedicated guide: Garden Clearance in Halifax — Easy Skip Hire with AVA.

A skip can help you dispose of suitable garden waste, including:

  • Branches and hedge cuttings
  • Leaves
  • Grass cuttings
  • Unwanted garden timber
  • Suitable general garden-clearance waste

If your project involves large amounts of soil, stones or other heavy materials, let us know when booking.

Heavy waste can affect which skip size is suitable and how much material can safely be loaded.

Building and Renovation Waste

Renovating your kitchen or bathroom? Working on a building project?

Skips can be suitable for many common construction materials, including:

  • Bricks
  • Concrete
  • Rubble
  • Tiles
  • Suitable timber
  • General renovation waste

Always tell us what materials you're disposing of. Some building materials require separate disposal arrangements and cannot be mixed with general skip waste.

What Can't Go in a Skip?

Certain items must not be placed in a standard AVA skip.

1. Batteries

Batteries should never be thrown into a general waste skip.

This includes household batteries, rechargeable batteries and lithium-ion batteries.

Batteries can become damaged during waste collection or processing. Some can overheat, ignite or cause serious fires.

Always dispose of batteries through an appropriate separate collection or recycling service.

2. Electrical Appliances

Electrical waste often requires separate collection and treatment.

Items such as fridges, freezers, cookers and other electrical appliances should not be placed in an AVA skip without an alternative arrangement being agreed.

If you're clearing out a kitchen or replacing appliances, ask us about the appropriate disposal route.

3. Asbestos

Asbestos must never be placed in a standard skip.

It requires specialist handling and disposal arrangements because exposure to asbestos fibres can cause serious health problems.

If you suspect that material contains asbestos, stop work and seek appropriate professional advice before disturbing it.

4. Paint, Oils and Chemicals

Liquids and hazardous substances must not be placed in a general skip.

Examples include:

  • Paints and liquid coatings
  • Oils
  • Fuels
  • Solvents
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Other liquid waste

These materials may create environmental, health and safety risks and must be disposed of through suitable waste-management arrangements.

5. Gas Cylinders and Aerosols

Gas bottles, pressurised cylinders, fire extinguishers and aerosols must not be placed in standard AVA skips.

Pressurised containers can be dangerous when damaged or exposed to heat. Always arrange appropriate disposal separately.

6. Tyres

Tyres are not permitted in standard AVA skips.

If you need to dispose of tyres, ask about a suitable authorised disposal service.

7. Plasterboard

Plasterboard must not be placed in AVA's standard mixed-waste skips.

It requires appropriate handling and disposal arrangements.

If your renovation involves removing plasterboard, tell us before booking so you can arrange a suitable waste-disposal option.

8. Sofas and Upholstered Seating

Old sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating may contain substances known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

These materials are subject to specific waste-handling requirements.

Do not place upholstered seating in an AVA skip unless the team has expressly confirmed an appropriate arrangement.

Are There Extra Charges for Certain Items?

Some waste materials require additional handling or have different disposal costs.

AVA's published skip-hire terms identify additional charges for mattresses. They also identify certain materials — including roofing felt, artificial grass, carpets and underlay — as being subject to weight-based pricing.

If your waste includes these materials, tell us before booking so we can explain the relevant arrangements.

Being clear about what you're disposing of helps avoid unexpected problems.

Can You Overfill a Skip?

No.

Skips must be loaded safely and should not be filled above the permitted level.

Overloaded skips can create hazards during collection and transportation. If your skip is overloaded, it may not be possible to collect it until the excess material has been removed.

If you're unsure how much waste your project will produce, it's better to discuss the right skip size before ordering.

What Size Skip Do You Need?

AVA provides different skip sizes for different projects.

Mini, Midi and larger skips are available to suit different projects. Mini skips are suitable for smaller clearances and light DIY jobs. Midi skips provide additional capacity for household clearances and renovation projects. Larger skips are suitable for bigger clearances and construction work, subject to the type and weight of waste.

If you're unsure which size is appropriate, explain your project to our team — we'll help you choose a suitable option.

What Happens to Waste After Collection?

Once your skip has been collected, the waste must be managed appropriately.

Different materials may require different treatment, recovery or disposal arrangements.

Correctly identifying the waste at the booking stage helps ensure it is handled correctly. Keeping prohibited materials out of skips is an important part of that process.
